[[Begin->A man on the street]]
This is 911 please state the nature of your emergency... Uh huh... Yeah...Well, that's unfortunate... What was that? 9th sector? Hold on a moment.
Uh sorry, I'm afraid you'll have to wait in queue until I can send out a dispatch. Unless you're willing to buy an expedite package for $5000. That's not including the $600 surcharge fee we'll have to charge you for your non-standard distance from a MedbayTM hospital and another $300 for the non-member fee which will have to go up to $600 if you don't have at least a silver rated insurance plan which I can set you up with if...
You hang up the phone.
No wonder no one bothers calling 911 these days.
[[There's nothing to do now->Walk away]]
It's not your problem. Even if you wanted to, there's nothing you can do for this man. You head off to your job.
Work. The usual grind in your small cubicle in between SoyCaffeTM breaks. The train ride back runs late as usual.
Home. You plop yourself onto bed and drift into sleep. The night is filled with fitful dreams.
The next day rises. TV, eggs, toast and orange juice. You don't see a news report about the body.
Sure enough, as you walk to work he's still there. The blood around the body is caked and dried.
People walk around the body.
[[Go to the body]]
[[Walk away->Loop]]June 19, 2087
Moonlight. Dulled memories swirl in a bottle. He sways side to side across the street, unknown to the world or himself.
Another swig, long and deep. Finishes his liquid drag with a loud "Pwhaaaaa", not content like, but more like a man about to drown.
The car sees him a moment after it is too late. Limbs fly into the air and land with a crunch.
The car drives on. People notice, but no one stops. At best, they move around the body splattered on the street. At worst, they step on him.
You were walking by when you saw it happen. You could help. Or not. It was his fault after all. The new PC laws hold little leniency for drunks.
Then again, that is the most amount of blood you've seen on the streets for a long while.
[[Call 911]]
[[Walk away]]As you stand over the body, you can't help but come to the conclusion that you can't do anything for the man. Even if you pick him up, there would be nowhere to dump him. Land for graves is in high demand and even cremation costs the kind of money you can't afford right now.
You're so deep in the thought that you don't notice an old bearded man walk up behind you.
"Ya want elp em?"
You turn around. The old man is wearing sweatpants and a "I live Maine" hoodie. He smells like he hasn't bathed in weeks and has a bottle of alcohol in his hand. He takes a swig as he questions you again.
"Ya deef or wat? Yuh want elp dis tinman, ur ya goona let em rot?"
[["Can you say that again, except a bit clearer?"]]
[[Yes, I want to help him]]
[[No, I'm going to work now->Loop]]
Every day is the same day.
1. You get up
2. You eat breakfast while watching the news
3. You go to work
4. You do your work
5. You go home
6. You get home, eat, wash, and sleep
7. [[You try not to think about the body->Walk away]]
This has been your life for years. It will continue to be your life for years to come. The bearded man stares at you long enough for it to be uncomfortable. As you begin to wonder whether you brought your stun gun with you today he does a slight hop up into the air. He then clears his throat and ruffles through the front pockets of his hoodie.
You watch as he pulls out of his pockets coins, keys, a clump of dirt, a bottle of off-brand cola, a mewing kitten, a pamplet of the Communist Manifesto, a packet of lima beans and a phone charger. He then hands you the phone charger.
"Ere yuh go."
He is looking at you as though he expecting you to do something with it.
[[What do you want me to do with this?]]
[[Give him back the charger and back away slowly.]]The bearded man sighs. He mutters something under his breath which you can barely make out as "Boxman" before scribbling a few numbers onto his arm with a marker. He then straightens his back as he looks you directly in the eye.
"Look, do you want to help this guy or not?"
[[Yes, I want to help him]]
[[No]]"Yer a banana peel."
The bearded man walks away while singing kumbaya.
[[Go to work->Walk away]] "Ya put it in 'is brain. Den ya put it yer brain. Works like a sock et ya see?"
Before you can react, the bearded man shoves you to the ground and sits on your back. Even though this is an obvious violation of Article 32, Section 15, nobody walking near the area seems to care as a twitchy eyed hobo sticks a phone charger into your head. You watch, helpless as he then connects the other end to the dead body.
"Now, da best Ad vice I got fer yuh is to never, EVER, follow da fairies. Otterwise, gud luck. Ya'll need et."
With the bearded man's final words, the world goes black.
[[INITIALIZING PROGRAM]]
As you back away the bearded man goes quiet. Then, without warning, he squints his eyes before shouting "EY! WHERE YA GOIN YA NILLY?!".
It takes you five hours of running before you're able to shake him off of you. By that point you're late to work and get chewed out by your boss.
As you're walking back from work the bearded man sees you again and it takes another five hours before you're back at home in your bed again.
All in all it was a pretty horid day.

RETURNING USER TO REAL SPACE
HAVE A NICE DAY
[[Return to the real world]]Sludge and mud. It as though he is drowning on air, every breath chokes, every step hurts. Painful, without a drop of color in the sky.
Robert is sitting on a park bench, looking out onto a discarded pond. Trash, gunk, spilled garbage and the odd conspicuous bag here and there. It's a dump. This is where he spends his time. It makes him feel closer to himself.
It's different from before, without anywhere to go, it makes sense to stay here for awhile, saunter off to a dingy bar and then stumble back home before passing out.
It's no wonder Robert died how he did.
[[Find out why he lives this way]]
[[Try to get him to do something different]]
Robert is sitting in a chair. Only a chair. Yet it feels like he is bending down, begging for his life, a short blade pointed at his stomach as the judge leers over.
"Why don't you just end it yourself?" He hears this, yet not a word has been spilled yet. But he knows. He was taught after all in the ways of speaking without words. The warfare of faces. The gazes of disappointment.
Again, he is only sitting down, drinking a cup of tea.
The mother stirs. That's right, not mother. The mother. He is so far gone he knows her in this scene only as the mother.
The mother sits across from him and is about to ask him a question.
[[Why are you such a failure?]]
[[Why couldn't you be normal?]]
[[Why don't you just quit?]]
Though each word stings, he is prepared this time. Or so he thinks.
"The work I do saves lives. It's not about money or fame. I can make a difference!"
The mother stares at him with all the decorum expected for a rotten piece of fruit. She gets up without a word and strides across the room to the door. Just as she is about to leave, she gives the slightest glance back.
"One day you will realize just how useless you really are."
With that she closes the door and Robert is left sitting alone.
It is time for work.
[[Go to work]]How to Read:
Just pick the options that suit you. There is only one ending, but how you get there is up to you.
[[Next->Begin]]You'd have to go back for that. Robert would rather not go back. He looks at you, but it's more like he is looking at himself. He can't go back, not now, not ever. Doing so would be more painful then just staying here and rotting.
"At least there's booze here", he thinks.
[["If you want to get better we have to go back"]]
[[Find another way for him to live->Try to get him to do something different]] What could you say to Robert to get him to stop living this way?
[[You could get a job]]
[[You could get a hobby]]
[[You could get a life]]Robert is looking at you directly now. He squints his eyes and sneers.
"Get better, eh. Is that how you see me? Just some useless schmuck in needing of saving. Who are you to think that I need saving? I'm perfectly happy. Yes, happy! I'm more happy then I've been in my entire life. I've got all the things I need. Booze and a bench. Now if you'll excuse me I'll get back to just that."
Robert turn aways from you and pulls out a bottle of alcohol from under the bench.
[[The happiest you've ever been? That can't be true]]
[[There's more to life than sitting on a bench and drinking]]Though each word stings, he is prepared this time. Or so he thinks.

It is time for work.
[[Go to work]]"It's true. Happiest I've ever been."
Robert tries his best to keep a straight face, but he doesn't look straight at you when he replies.
He's looking at something to the side.
[[Try to see what it is]]
[[Try to convince him that he could be happier->Try to get him to do something different]] "Like what?"
As far as you can tell, Robert does not seem to be asking you this sarcastically.
[[You could get a job]]
[[You could get a hobby]]
[[You could get a life]]It's hard to see past all the dirt and grime beyond the bench. Yet, somehow, you are able to see the small glint of something shining in between strands of grass.
It's a ring.
[[Touch the ring]]
[[Talk to Robert about things to do in life->Try to get him to do something different]] Robert doesn't notice as you slink your way over to the ring. By the time he jumps up to try and stop you from pick it up it's already too late.
The world evaporates before your eyes.
[[Go back to the past]]You're standing at an intersection. Not an actual intersection but one where paths diverge. You're looking at a different Robert now. A Robert that is happy. A Robert that cares about his life.
A Robert that carries a ring in his pocket.
Right now he is combing his hair in front of a mirror, humming a tune to himself. Today is the big day. Months of side jobs and scrounging for every little bit of cash has led up to this moment.
Satisfied with his hair he leaves the bathroom and steps into his studio apartment. While he once jokingly refered to it as his own personal prison cell, Robert now looks around with a feeling of wistfulness. He's sold everything except for a mattress, a chair and a small coffee table. Everything else has already been shipped off to the house. It's been a long and tough journey, but he's finally made it.
There's only one thing left to do.
[[Go and propose]]"I had one... Before things happened..."
Robert looks to the ground. You notice him staring at something in a patch of grass nearby.
[[Try to see what it is]]
[[Try to suggest something else->Try to get him to do something different]] "This is my hobby."
Figures he would say that.
You notice that Robert is looking at something on the ground.
[[Try to see what it is]]
[[Try to suggest something else->Try to get him to do something different]] Robert looks at you with an expression of "I can't believe you just said that".
The unbridled rage of decades of unspoken discontent manifests itself on Robert's face and posture as he stands up from the bench.
"Of all the things you could have said, you just had to say her favorite catch phrase."
As Robert starts walking in your direction, you can feel the fixer begin to detach you from the program.
This is obviously a touchy subject for Robert...
[[The world goes black->fixer]]Robert takes a breath and steps out of his apartment. In an ideal world he will propose to the person he loves, get married, have family in his newly purchased home and live out the rest of his days in happiness,
This is not what happened. But you could make Robert think this is what happened.
At least he'll be happy.

Robert received a phone call on that day.
The soldier comes back home to see their family. Those left behind wait for their return.
Robert marched to the hospital, not knowing if he would ever return.
First he sold every one of his belongings. Then he sold his car. He sold his time, his very life and when that wasn't enough he sold the house that was meant to be their future. But it wasn't enough. It was never enough.
The one thing he couldn't bear to part with was the ring...
[[Days shift the world]]He is walking down a white corridor. Further inside in a sterile room Robert knows there lies the body of someone he can't bear to meet.
So he stands at the entrance, not moving, nor leaving.
Stuck. Trapped and nowhere to go.
It's been like this for years.
[[Move forward]]
[[Leave]]He moves forward. Though he doesn't want to, he moves towards the room that he already knows holds someone dear.
He reaches the body. It lies stiff, and the monitor returns only a flat beep.

You look around for the body of Robert but you can't seem to find him. All you can see is the old bearded man, lying on the ground and fast asleep.
The phone charger is still dangling from the side of your head. As you reach to pull it out you come to the realization that the other end is still connected.
It's connected to the old bearded man.
[[Wake him up, ask him what's happening]]
[[Just leave it and go home]]You shake the old bearded man awake. He jolts in surprise as his eyes open.
"Who the hell are you?!"
The bearded man looks around.
"And where am I? Why do I have such a massive headache? Are you trying to mug me?!"
[[Explain what just happened]]Home. Sleep. Rest.
The next morning as you're eating breakfast you see a news report about how the famous Doctor Robert Leighman has been found after being reported missing for five years.
After the last bite of toast you head off for work.
Weeks pass by and you never hear back from the person who wrote the note.
Things just continue along as usual, with no real mention of what you just went through either on the news or in person.
It seems like everything has gone back to normal.
That is, until a box shows up at your door one day.
[[Open the box]]You try your best to explain how there was a dead body here, how he connected a phone charger to you and the body, how you had to fix all the parts of the body and how once you did you ended up back here.
The bearded man looks at you like you're crazy.
"Look, I'm not interested in anything you're selling. I need to go back home, I've got a lot of work to settle out and I've no time to be sitting around on park benches and drinking myself to death."
With that the old bearded man gets up and walks away. After a couple blocks down you see him notice he has a few bottles of alcohol in the pockets of his hoodie. As he nears a trash can he tosses the bottles into the trash before walking out of sight.
Just as you begin to wonder whether you dreamt everything that just happened you notice a sticky note that's been attached to your chest. It reads...
"Good work, I'll see you next Tuesday."
There's also a bundle of $100 dollars bills in your pockets.

[[Go back to the fixer->fixer]] There's a great burden weighing down on his shoulders. It feels like ten tons crushing the bones, yet it is nothing more than air floating around the head.
He's standing on a bridge.
It's windy.
[[Jump]]
[[Fly]]He heads off to work. The hospital is busy with activity. It doesn't take long before Robert blends into a swirl of moving bodies. Somehow, one of the assistant nurses is able to flag Robert down.
"I'm glad I caught you when I did. There's two patients down in surgery that needs your attention right now. I saw them coming in actually, car accident, boy and girl."
With the words "car accident" Robert was already rushing down to the operating room. This was the reason why he became a doctor, the reason his mother could never come to understand. Instead of just living for money he could make a difference. He could save people's lives. But more than that...
He didn't want others to feel as helpless as he did.
In less than a minute Robert is close to the surgery room. But, before he can reach it he notices the owner of the hospital waiting in the hallway. As he notices Robert approaching he walks up and gives Robert a big hug.
"Robert you bastard, I'm glad you came! I was worried there for a second that you didn't get my message."
"What message?" Though Robert wants nothing more than to rush along he knows better than to ignore the hospital owner.
"Oh, so you didn't get it. Well, no matter. I- No, WE have a big opportunity for the hospital. Inside this operating room is 1st sector's governor. He's in there for heart surgery and I need you to do the operation. Now, I could get one of the other doctors to do it, but we need to make sure that this goes off without a hitch and you're the best we've got. So go in there, fix him up and once that's done I'll see about getting you promoted to the head of your department. Now, I've got to go address the media. I'll see you when it's done."
Before Robert can say anything the hospital owner has already left.
In front of Robert is two operating rooms. On the left is the operating room with the boy and the girl. On the right is the operating room with the governor. A nurse aide is standing in front of the left room.
[[Ask who is going to be operating on the boy and the girl]]
[[Operate on the governor]]The nurse aide looks up at Robert.
"Oh! Hello, Doctor Leighman. I thought you would have gone over to where the governer is. There's no one currently operating on that boy and girl by the way. Doctor Kendall was going to do it but the hospital owner came down personally to tell everyone to stop working on all the other rooms and head over to governer's operating table."
The nurse aide pauses, uncertainty plastered all over their face.
"I... was just thinking you know. It's not right. I want to do something, but I just can't and even if I could if I went in there right now I would lose everything."
I just feel helpless. Though the aide didn't say that, Robert knew that was how he felt.
[[Obey orders, operate on the governer->Operate on the governor]]
[[Disobey orders, operate on the children]]
It was a simple fix. Twenty doctors crowded around a single patient. Doctors that could be helping people that were dying right this second. Even after the operation was done the hospital owner still wouldn't let Robert leave until all the pictures were taken, hands shook and questions answered.
It was seven hours before Robert was able to return to the operating room with the boy and girl but it was empty. The nurse aide from before noticed Robert standing there and came up to confirm what Robert already knew.
"They're gone, Doctor."
It is night time as Robert exits the hospital and wanders out onto the street. It is some time before he is able to look down at the sheet of paper he has clutched in his hand. "Personally congratulate you... Promotion to head of surgery...You done something truly heroic today..."
Robert eyes a garbage bin as he is walking and tosses the paper away. His mother was right. He truly is useless.
With that Robert wanders off into the night and isn't seen at the hospital in years.
[[We come full circle->fixer]]"Come on, let's go."
Robert holds open the door to the operating room as he looks back.
"If anyone asks, I held you at gunpoint and forced you to help me operate."
The nurse aide face breaks out into a wide grin as him and Robert enter the operating room.
With so few hands it takes them a full day to finish the procedure. At times Robert felt he wouldn't be able to do it, other times he wondered if he was just making a one giant mistake.
But in the end, the boy and the girl were saved.
As he Robert put on the final stitch he couldn't help but think, "Not so useless now, eh?".
The nurse aide tells Robert that he can handle what's left and that Robert so go get some rest. Robert takes him up on that offer and heads out the door.
Outside there is a line of police officers and a very angry hospital owner.
"You have cost me dearly, Robert. Do you know that?"
Robert was prepared for this, though he is concerned about the number of police that are staring him down.
"Look, there were plenty of other doctors who could operate on the governer. It would have been a waste for me to-"
"THE GOVERNER IS DEAD! DO YOU HEAR ME?! DEAD! If only you had just listened to me, none of this would have happened!"
Robert can't help but cringe at this. "That doesn't any sense! How is it my fault when even the entirety of the hospital couldn't save the governer?!"
The hospital owner shakes his head. "Well, somebody has to take responsibility for this. The death of the governer is no trivial matter and if somebody isn't held liable then the whole hospital will go under."
Before Robert even realizes what this means the police officers already have him in hand cuffs.
"Again, Robert, if you had just listened to me I wouldn't have had to do this."
The hospital owner nods to the police officers.
"We're done here."
With that the police haul Robert away.
[[Jailed in the dark]]
Robert is arrested and put in a jail cell alone. Months pass by without any word from the outside as to what is going on. Eventually people come to Robert's cell. He expects that he will go to prison now, but no. An investigation was filed and Robert was cleared of all culpability.
The same couldn't be said of his reputation though.
He lost his job at Bell Tower Hospital, that was a given. However, no matter where he went, no other hospital in 1st sector would take him. He was known as "The Governer Killer", as though Robert had somehow personally murderer the governer.
Robert knew the owner of Bell Tower Hospital was spiteful, but he didn't figure that he would be this bad.
Now what? Is this it? Was it all for nothing?
[[No, you made a difference]]
[[Yes, you are stupid]]"You really think so?"
Robert is looking at you directly now.
"Yeah, I guess I did. If anything, at least I showed mother that what I do isn't completely pointless. Yeah... And it's not as if it's the end of the world, is it? Could always go to 8th or 9th sector and help out there. They for sure always are in need of doctors."
Robert walks off into the distance before turning back one last time.
"Hey, thanks."
[[You're welcome]]
Rage. The world shifts and you see Robert standing directly in front of you.
"Why? Why was I stupid for just wanting to help people!? That's all I wanted to do! But no. It's all about money, it all about fame, it's all about power. Well, you know what, screw you. Screw you all! If I'm so wrong for wanting to do good then I don't want to be right. I'll show you all, you'll see."
